What You Need to Know About Underride Accidents
Underride accidents often result in serious injury or death. They occur when a passenger vehicle or motorcycle collides with a large commercial truck, and the vehicle becomes pinned under the trailer of the truck. Unlike collisions between 2 similar-sized passenger vehicles, where the force is often dispersed between the two cars, commercial trucks are so large that the majority of the damage centers on the passenger vehicle.
There are 3 main types of underride accidents. These include:
- Rear-end underride accidents
- Side underride collisions
- Jackknife underride collisions
Rear-end underride accidents occur when a passenger vehicle slams into the back end of a commercial truck. These collisions often occur at night or in poor weather conditions. The driver of the vehicle often does not see the truck or realize how slow the truck is moving until it’s too late.
Side underride accidents happen when a commercial truck attempts to change lanes, make a left turn, or cross traffic and hits a passenger vehicle from the side. If the truck driver continues to travel without stopping, the vehicle may become completely pinned under the truck. These accidents are extremely dangerous, and drivers of passenger vehicles should avoid lingering in a truck’s blind spot and be aware of the movement of commercial trucks on freeways or intersections.
Jackknife underride collisions occur when the trailer of a truck swings out to the side and becomes perpendicular to the cab. If the trailer shifts into other lanes, it may crash into passenger vehicles and motorcycles. This would cause them to become partially or fully pinned underneath.
Underride accidents may be caused by:
- Inadequate brake lights or tail lights of trucks
- Poor visibility and weather conditions
- Improperly maintained underside guards
- Truck driver negligence
Visibility is a key factor in preventing underride accidents. If a truck is going excessively slow or is pulled over to the side of a road, the trucker must provide adequate lighting to alert other drivers. This may involve using retroreflective triangles and emergency flashers. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Transportation mandates all commercial trucks to have red and white striped, retroreflective tape on the sides and rear of the trailer. Drivers must also regularly inspect the safety tape to ensure it is not faded or worn.
